Elon Musk has waded in on the population crisis in Greece as the country sees a rapid drop in fertility rates.

Posting on X, the Tesla and SpaceX boss said: “Wow, almost twice as many people died as there were babies born in Greece.”

He was responding to a report that forecasted Greece’s population to drop by as much as 25 percent by 2070.

The average population drop expected by this time for other EU countries is four percent.

Greece also saw its lowest number of births in nearly a century with just 77,000 births.

Meanwhile, the country had 140,000 deaths in the same year.

Mr Musk, who also owns X, formerly Twitter, commented on Greece’s population crisis in April.

He said: “Greece is one of dozens of countries experiencing population collapse due to low birth rates.”

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has acknowledged the crisis, saying that “the demographic collapse is becoming an existential challenge for our future.”

He added that while the problem is shared by many other Western countries, “in Greece, however, there are also some special conditions.”

Mr Mitsotakis continued: “The truth is that today our people are among the most elderly in Europe. In the last five years, Greek women aged 20-40 have decreased by 150,000 as a result of a decline in births that actually started in the 1980s.

“It has peaks in specific areas and this means that national strategies are not sufficient and that specific local provisions are also needed, with the overall demographic collapse literally becoming an existential bet for our future.”

According to reports, Mr Musk is on course to become the world’s first trillionaire. He is already said to be the richest man on Earth with an estimated fortune of $250billion (£190billion).
