A major European airport was evacuated this morning following a bomb threat, and all flights were cancelled as a result. Billund Airport, in central Denmark was put on alert after the threat late this morning (April 20).

No time has yet been set for flights to resume. A man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The airport is the second largest in the country and due to the mass cancellation of flights, travellers will be anxiously waiting to learn when and if they will be able to resume their journeys.

South East Jutland Police said that they received reports of a bomb threat at 10.30am on April 20, and that the site had been fully evacuated by 11.40am. The force said on X: “Currently, there is no flight activity at Billund Airport, and there is no timeframe for when it will resume.”

Police inspector Michael Weiss said of the incident: “We ask everyone not to drive towards the airport and to follow the police’s instructions on the spot.

“The evacuation has proceeded calmly and as expected, with travellers following our instructions.”

Flights to Heathrow and Stansted have either been cancelled or delayed, while those jetting off to other destinations around Europe have also seen their trips cancelled, delayed or their route diverted.

Authorities are looking into whether there is a connection between this latest bomb threat and an explosion at an ATM in Billund at around 4am on Saturday.

Inspector Weiss declined to comment on whether the person that was arrested was of Danish origin.

The local Fire Service shared on social media that they are involved in the police investigation.

Billund airport’s closest landmark is the nearby Legoland theme park and the brand’s HQ.
