The mother of a 19-year-old British man missing on Tenerife for more than a week has issued a heartbreaking plea to find him.

Jay Slater, an appentice bricklayer from Lancashire, was last heard from on Monday morning.

According to friends, he had been trying to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus.

Now his mother, Debbie Duncan, who has been on the Spanish island since Tuesday to help find him, has said “we just need you home”.

She said: ” I’ve not slept, I’m exhausted. It’s been awful.

“I can’t give up on him, I just can’t.”

She added: “People say: ‘Yeah, I understand’ – no, you don’t, you don’t understand.”

The search for Jay continues on Sunday, with drones, rescue dogs, and helicopters among the resources deployed in a bid to find him in recent days.

Rachel Hargreaves, a family friend, said they would stay on the island until they got an “outcome”.

She said: “We’ve got to live in hope haven’t we – you can’t give up on anything can you really.

“We’re here and we’re staying until we’ve got an outcome.”

Rachel added: “We’re happy for anyone who wants to help or anyone with information or anything like that – like I say we’re still living in hope that we’re going to get a positive outcome.

“We just feel like we’ll leave it to the professionals now, and that’s the best thing to do.”
