BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (TCD) — A 37-year-old convicted felon is in custody on suspicion of kidnapping and killing his 40-year-old girlfriend, a mother of four, and placing her into a car trunk before driving off in her vehicle.

The Birmingham Police Department announced in a bulletin that Nakita Davidson was last seen on April 11 at approximately 1:45 a.m. near 6th Avenue Southwest and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. At around 2:11 a.m., officers responded to the scene of a two-vehicle accident.

Police observed one vehicle at the location and found “evidence of a violent crime.” Investigators suspect Cedric Robertson intentionally ran into his girlfriend’s vehicle in the early hours, AL.com reports. Robertson then allegedly shot Davidson and placed her into the trunk of her car before driving off with her.

Investigators reportedly recovered Robertson’s cellphone at the scene.

Court documents reviewed by The Associated Press say a witness saw Robertson shoot a woman before putting her into the trunk of a 2008 burgundy Saturn Outlook and fleeing in the vehicle.

According to police, on Friday, April 12, at around 3:18 p.m., the U.S. Marshals Task Force and Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team found Davidson’s remains in her own car in the 2300 block of 18th Place Southwest in a wooded location.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., officials located Robertson in the 2100 block of Northland Avenue Southwest and took him into custody. According to The Associated Press, law enforcement officials found Robertson as he was moving from one abandoned house to another.

Robertson is in custody in the Jefferson County Jail without bond on charges of capital murder during kidnapping, kidnapping, and failure to appear felony.

Davidson’s brother told AL.com that the victim and Robertson had been dating for less than a year. He told the news site, “Her plan was to get away from him. That’s what she was trying to do that night.”

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade reportedly said, “It’s sad. It’s a sad day. And it bothers us deeply because Nakita had four children who will be without a mother.”

According to AL.com, Robertson has a criminal history, including prior felony convictions dating back to 2004.
