Wild new footage purports to show a Russian “barn tank” rolling over a string of hidden landmines before being pounced upon by Ukrainian kamikaze drones.
In the footage, captured by Ukraine‘s 63rd Mechanised Brigade, a tank is seen moving across grassy terrain before a huge explosion erupts from an apparent mine.
A succession of blasts then follows as the armoured vehicle – identified as a Russian “barn tank” – tries to get to safety.
Vladimir Putin‘s troops have stepped up the use of the vehicles – which are covered in armoured metal boxes to defend them against drone attacks – since early April, the Kyiv Post previously reported.
The tank eventually stops after driving desperately through several large explosions. Separate clips taken by Ukrainian drones show them swooping down on what appears to be the same vehicle, their feeds cutting out as they strike.
Another clip shows one final explosion that sends the occupants of the tank scurrying away. In a post on X sharing the clip, Ukraine‘s Ministry of Defense wrote: “Adventures of the Russian barn-tank in the Ukrainian field.
“The path is treacherous, filled with mines and drones, and ultimately, it leads to destruction,” it added.
It’s not known where the footage was taken, and material of this kind is notoriously difficult to verify.
The conflict, which began in February 2022, is now well into its third year, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been pushing the US for permission to use longer-range missile systems and strike targets deeper within Russia.
The Pentagon and White House are yet to loosen those restrictions, with the Defense Department emphasising that Ukraine can already hit Moscow with Ukrainian-produced drones.
The leadership in Washington is thought to be hesitating on the strategic implications of a US-made missile potentially striking the Russian capital.
Zelensky is continuing to lobby Ukraine‘s allies for the green light on the weapons and visited a Pennsylvania ammunition factory on Sunday to thank workers producing key munitions used to fend off the Kremlin’s forces.
Putin has warned that Russia would be “at war” with the United States and its NATO allies if they permitted Kyiv to use the long-range weapons.
