Fighting was raging in the Russian town of Sudzha as around 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers opened a new front in the war, according to Moscow.
Russia‘s Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov claimed that a large Ukrainian force had assaulted the town of around 5,000 people with armoured vehicles and tanks.
The army boss claimed that Kyiv’s forces had failed to make a breakthrough in the region.
He said: “The actions of the units covering the state border together with border guards and reinforcement units, air strikes, missile forces and artillery fire have stopped the enemy’s advance deep into the territory in the Kursk direction.”
However, Russian military bloggers alleged that Ukraine‘s forces had seized the town with Russian units responding to the incursion.
Some of these influential military bloggers have written that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had captured the gas measuring station in the town part of the Kursk region bordering Ukraine on the west.
The town is key in the Russian economy, as gas transit from Russia to the European Union goes through it. The station reportedly captured accounts for almost half of Russian gas exports to the West, according to independent Russian news outlet Astra. While the EU has dramatically reduced the amount of Russian gas it used to import following the beginning of Moscow’s unlawful invasion, significant quantities are still flowing into the bloc.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have not yet commented on the reported attack on Sudzha.
