Locals have been left completely baffled after a body was discovered in the search for missing British teenager Jay Slater

The human remains were found in the remote Masca area of Tenerife and rescue teams continued to scour the area to make sure nothing was missing.

One local said it was “exceptionally difficult” to travel down into the valley on foot.

Speaking to Sky News, another added: “It is sad – the spot where they found him shows he had gone a long way into the ravine. It is hard to understand how he got there.”

Yesterday, footage released by Spanish police showed rescuers scaling near verticle cliff faces in the ravine while some entered and left the area via helicopter. The body is also believed to have been removed by helicopter.

Jay‘s family have now said they believe the 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer “fell from a height” and died “instantly”.

Speaking to MailOnline, a spokesman for the family said they are “absolutely broken”.

The spokesman said: “They are devastated. It’s not the outcome they were hoping for. It looks as if he fell from a height so he would most likely have been killed instantly and he wasn’t there for a long time.”

He said the family appreciated that the area where he was finally found was remote and that “there is no criticism of the search”.

Mr Slater’s friend Lucy Law, who was one of the last people to speak him, paid tribute to the teen calling him “the happiest person in the room”.

She said: “Honestly lost for words. Always the happiest and most smiley person in the room, you was one of a kind Jay and you’ll be missed more than you know.”

Lucy and Jay had attended a rave at Papagayo nightclub on June 16 during the NRG music festival in Tenerife.

The 19-year-old rang Lucy in the morning of June 17 as he tried to make his way back to their hotel along a mountainous path in the north-west of the island.

In a desperate attempt to make it back to the hotel he was staying at, Slater began walking the 10-hour journey.

Authorities called off the operation at the end of June, though they insisted the investigation into his disappearance would continue.

After authorities halted the search operation, various volunteers stepped in to assist Slater’s heartbroken family as they continued their own efforts.
