GIBSON COUNTY, Ind. (TCN) — A 42-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of killing his wife with a hammer, placing her remains into a vehicle, and driving it into a river.
According to the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Flaherty reported his wife, 36-year-old Kayla Flaherty, missing on the night of Oct. 3. Deputies told WFIE-TV that Flaherty said his wife was on her way to her mother’s house but never made it. However, investigators reportedly reviewed cellphone records indicating that she did not drive toward her mother’s residence.
According to WFIE, Daniel Flaherty eventually admitted to hitting Kayla Flaherty with a hammer in their living room before putting her body in her SUV. Daniel Flaherty allegedly drove the SUV to Knox County, set it on fire, and drove it into the Wabash River.
Flaherty and his wife were reportedly in the middle of a divorce at the time of the victim’s death.
WFIE reports that the suspect informed deputies where he dumped the SUV, and officials found Kayla Flaherty’s body inside the vehicle in the river.
Daniel Flaherty was booked into the Gibson County Jail on Oct. 4 on a charge of murder, and he remains held without bond.
