The beautiful Greek island ‘just as good as Mykonos’ without the crowds of tourists

Mykonos is by far the most famous and popular among the Cyclades islands, attracting around two million tourists last year.

Its popularity, however, has led to the island’s environment and local community suffering issues linked to over-tourism.

Cruise ship tourism in particular has sparked concerns the island may become overwhelmed, with the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announcing earlier this year plans to reduce the footfall of thousands of passengers on the “clearly suffering” most popular destinations in the South Aegean Sea.

Tourists looking for less congested destinations in the Cyclades should look no further than Sifnos, an island lying between Serifos and Milos.

Some 80 miles from the Piraeus port in Athens, Sifnos can be reached via ferry from nearby islands after landing at the airports in either the Greek capital, Paros or Milos.

After stepping off a boat at Kamares, the island’s little port, tourists are welcomed by white-washed buildings and charming tavernas.

The island has it all, from a lively nightlife to relaxing beaches – including Chrissopigi, some 4.9 miles southeast of Sifnos capital Apollonia, and Platys Gialos, 5.50 miles south of the town.

The village of Apollonia itself, named after the Greek god Apollo, is worth a visit, with buildings nestled on top of three hills featuring the traditional Cycladic architecture.

Sifnos is also famous for its archaeological site of Agios Andreas, and museums – the Archaeological Museum and Folklore Museum.

The island has also gained fame as a foodie paradise in Greece thanks to local chef Nicholas Tselementes, who in 1910 wrote the first Greek book of recipes.

Among the most famous local delicacies are chickpea stew, caper salad and the Sifnian honey pie.
