LOS ANGELES (TCN) — A homeless woman will spend 35 years to life in state prison for breaking into a home and fatally shooting a 33-year-old activist last year.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced Jameelah Michl’s sentencing guidelines on July 10 for the death of Michael Latt. Michl pleaded guilty last month to one count of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree burglary, and use of a firearm.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, on Nov. 27, 2023, at approximately 6 p.m., Wilshire Area patrol officers responded to a home on Alandele Avenue, where they found Latt suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Prosecutors said Michl “targeted” Latt “for being friends with a woman she had been stalking.” Michl reportedly knocked on the door, and an occupant opened it. Prosecutors said the defendant, who was armed with a semi-automatic handgun, then forced herself in and shot Latt.

According to KTLA-TV, investigators believe Michl was living in her car at the time.

Gascón said, “As a tireless advocate for social justice, Mr. Latt championed equality, justice and equity in our criminal legal system. Mr. Latt’s ability to uplift the community left an indelible mark. His legacy will continue to inspire us to strive for a more just and inclusive society.”

Latt was reportedly the CEO of Lead With Love, an organization whose mission is to “harnesses the power of art to spark change, bring love, hope and healing to communities and empower others.”
