Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay said he is “lucky” to be standing after being involved in a bike crash in Connecticut last week.

“I’m lucky to be standing here. I’m in pain. It’s been a brutal week. And I’m sort of getting through it. But I cannot tell you the importance of wearing a helmet,” he said in a video posted to social media.

Ramsey, who appeared shaken up in the video, said with Father’s Day approaching, he is urging everyone to wear helmets while riding their motorcycles, adding that he “wouldn’t be here” today if he did not.

“Honestly, you’ve got to wear a helmet. I don’t care how short the journey is. I don’t care. The fact that these helmets cost money, but they’re crucial. Even with kids, a short journey, they’ve got to wear a helmet,” he added.

He also thanked the medical staff at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn., for treating him.

The chef also showed his bruises from the accident, which appeared to be a large, deep purple bruise that covered most of his side.
