FORT MYERS, Fla. (TCD) —  A 33-year-old man suspected of killing and dismembering his roommate was shot and killed by police over the weekend as he approached them holding a knife and human torso in his hands.

According to the Fort Myers Police Department, on Sunday, June 9, at around 11:30 p.m., officers were called to Grand Avenue and Waltman Street after receiving information about a woman and two young children hiding in a carport. When they arrived, they spoke with the adult female, who alleged her husband, Willy Lumaine, was “actively killing their roommate.”

Police went to the residence and “observed an open door and a trail of blood.” Officers immediately created a perimeter around the home and tried to make contact with Lumaine, as well as any potential victims.

Lumaine reportedly went to a back window and broke it with a large knife. Police allegedly ordered him to drop the weapon, but Lumaine “climbed out of the window holding the knife in one hand and what appeared to be a dismembered body part in the other.” In an incident report, police specified the body part as a torso.

Lumaine reportedly climbed out of the window and approached officers, still holding the knife. Police shot at him and provided aid until medics arrived. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators determined a “violent attack” occurred at the home, resulting in the death and dismemberment of the victim.

According to the incident report shared by WFTX-TV, someone heard the roommate yell, “Help! He is killing me!” several times. Officers learned Lumaine “had been mad” since June 8 “for unknown reasons,” and his mood continued into June 9.

Fort Myers Police officers reportedly initially used Tasers to try and stop Lumaine as he walked toward them with the knife, but it was not effective. The roommate’s head was found near a trash can, while the “remainder of the body was located within the residence.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an officer-involved shooting investigation while the officer or officers remain on administrative leave.
