Egypt archaeologists baffled by large mystery ‘anomaly’ found buried under Giza pyramids

Archaeologists in Egypt have been left baffled after a large “anomaly” was discovered buried under the Giza pyramid complex.

Believed to have been build during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, the necropolis is home to the the Great Pyramid, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure and the Great Sphinx.

Despite dating back more than 4,000 years, experts are still piecing together its mysteries thanks to modern technology.

Using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), experts have discovered pair of underground structures in the Western Cemetery of Giza.

One of the “anomalies” appears to be shallow, the other much deeper, and are believed to be man-made dude to their shape.

The international team of researchers, led by Tohoku University’s Motoyuki Sato, published their findings in the journal Wiley.

They wrote: The shallow structure, which is L-shaped in the horizontal plane, 10 m by 10 m, was clearly imaged by GPR.”

The shallow structure seems to be filled with sand, meaning it was likely backfilled after construction. The researchers say that it might have served as an entrance to the deeper structure.

The deeper structure, according to the team, has a depth of up to two metres from the ground surface.

“Below this structure, ERT reveals a highly electrically resistive anomaly, which extends over an area of about 10 m by 10 m. The depth of the structure is about 5–10 m below the surface,” the paper states.

The “electrically resistive material in a sand dune can be a mixture of sand and gravel, including sparse spacing or air voids within it”.

They added: “We believe that the continuity of the shallow structure and the deep large structure is important. From the survey results, we cannot determine the material causing the anomaly, but it may be a large subsurface archaeological structure.

“The Western Cemetery at Giza is known as an important burial place of members of the royal family and high-class officers,”
