So far, 177 people have been reported as infected by the disease in the Zamfara outbreak. Health Minister Dr Aisha Anka confirmed the deaths during a press conference earlier this week, where she also revealed the symptoms associated with the disease.
These include abdominal swelling, fluid accumulation in the abdomen, enlarged liver and spleen, fever, and overall weakness, according to the Daily Star.
Dr Anka further disclosed that the disease has spread to three villages, with cases reported in Maradun, Shinkafi, and Gusau. Local authorities have acknowledged these instances, reports The Daily Star.
The National Centre for Disease Control has been alerted about the surge in cases and fatalities, and an emergency response has been activated to tackle the escalating infection rates.
As a parent, this news is absolutely terrifying. We must stay vigilant and ensure that our children are protected from such a devastating illness. My heart goes out to the families affected by this outbreak.
